In the peaceful village of Cammachmore, just meters from the North Sea, Nalin, a 70-year-old former captain and master mariner of Sri Lankan heritage, has breathed new life into the legendary Cammies — a once-closed restaurant now a beacon for Scotland’s local seafood. After decades at sea, his profound respect for the ocean has inspired him to reconnect people with the rich marine treasures available right on their doorstep, challenging Scotland's surprising indifference to its own seafood.
At Cammies, the menu is a celebration of the North Sea’s abundant harvest, much of which is underappreciated or hard to find — from skate wings and brown crab to lobster, razor clams, seasonal sardines, mackerel, and whole fish. With a focus on global influences, Nalin combines his Sri Lankan roots with international flavors to elevate humble, local ingredients into vibrant, sustainable dishes that honor both their health benefits and cultural significance.
Through passion and perseverance, Nalin is quietly shaping a new seafood culture in Aberdeenshire. He reminds the community that the North Sea is both a gift and a responsibility. The best restaurant near Aberdeen! We have been to many places, but this restaurant is the best of the dozens that we visited in Scotland. The shrimps and mussels were great!
